The Best Gifts for Artists 2020

Dear Wonderful, Creative You:

Each year I compile a short list of gifts that I think would be wonderfully nurturing for the artists in your life. It’s a list that I hope you as an artist share with your loved ones to give them ideas, and also as a way to spur you to think about what would truly nurture your art practice. As always, there’s a range of prices in the products I suggest, as well as some that are free. Finally, I have another little giveaway to make it fun! Comment on the post about your best gifts for artists in 2020 is. You could be the randomly chosen recipient of the fun zippy pouch I include here. I’ll draw the winner 1 week from today.

A Book About Art: Color: A Natural History of the Palette

I loved reading about how ochre is the most ancient color, and how red was traditionally (and continues to be sometimes) sourced from a bug! I find that reading related to art enriches my experience when I’m working with art materials.

Art Journal: Moleskine Art Watercolor Album

This is my go to journal. It’s small and light enough to carry around in my purse. This means I can use it on the go and take advantage of those “in between” times to brainstorm ideas, make sketches, slow draw patterns, and create.

Drawing Pen: Micron Pens, for Slow Drawing and Other Drawing Adventures

These are by far my favorite drawing pens. They have a lovely range of nibs for delicate and thick lines, and are waterproof and never pool.

White Gel Pen: Uniball Signo Gel Pen

Out of all the gel pens I’ve used, I’ve found Signa to write the smoothest and stay the best.

Watercolor Set: Daniel Smith

There’s no doubt that this set is a treat. It’s the best quality, most vibrant watercolor paint I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. Most of the time I use my travel set since it’s all set up and ready to go. I frequently carry it in my purse for the same reason.

Watercolor Paper for Slow Drawing and Painting Adventures

This is the paper I use to create my little slow drawing pieces, larger watercolor paintings, and it’s what I cut into 2 inch squares to make work for my BIG ART approach.

Watercolor Travel Brush

I use my travel brush all the time because it makes creating so easy, whether it’s for a few minutes, or a few hours.

Glue: YES Paste – My favorite adhesive

I use YES paste when I’m glueing my inchies for BIG ART pieces, when I’m making accordion fold books with Fluid Art, and when I’m creating personalized cards and notes with my art on cardstock. It’s very strong and holds things together, but also gives you a few minutes to reposition something if it’s not quite right.

The Gift of an Online Retreat or Class

Another amazing gift you can give the artist in your life is an online retreat or class. Especially now, where opportunities to gather face to face are limited, an online retreat or class is an amazing opportunity to connect with other artists and grow in their abilities. I offer gift certificates in denominations of $25, $50, and $100.

The Gift of Time

One of the best gifts you can give your beloved artist is time alone to create without interruptions. Imagine this: create a coupon for an afternoon of uninterrupted art time, their favorite snack, and cup of tea or coffee. Doesn’t that sound amazing? I could use one of those too!

Comment for a Chance to Win this Pouch!

Be sure to comment for a chance to win this wonderful zippy pouch for your portable art kit! Everything, minus the YES paste, works wonderfully in a portable art kit to keep you creating on the go.

Creatively Yours,

Amy

I love your art supply and book lists. It is always a treat to see what other artists like best and use in their practice. I will make a note of the pens this time, in both black and white! Thanks for sharing!

      Hi Sabine!

I know, I like that too. I’m not a fan of having too many supplies, but I think using the right tool for the job makes such a big difference in wanting to make art every day. I’m happy you like the list!

wow! Love it as a gift list! I love your list of things to take for traveling, I used to use the Yes Paste years ago when I was making lots of books and have since moved to Indianapolis and forgotten it. I do not have the Daniel smith watercolors but have a few tubes to make my own pallet. I just love everything you have taught me and used the tools to create more of my own works. Thank You Amy!

I’ve really enjoyed the Friday get togethers this year, Amy, and though I couldn’t always join in real time, I appreciated that I could get to them during a few quiet moments on the weekend. I just purchased the paper cutting class and really looking forward to working on that. Thanks for your generous spirit in all you offer us and I hope your December quietude is all you need it to be. I always look forward to this list! I also now have 2 other travel pouches: one has a 5×5 Handbook journal and a Micron pen (currently sepia). In the journal, on every other page, I’ve glued a photo of a person’s head; then I use the opposite page to try to draw the portrait.
My 3rd pouch contains several index cards, a variety of small pieces of ripped up paper, and a good glue stick (I like Uhu) so I can create small, quick collages when traveling.

    • Amy Maricle

Judy, I love that you gave your own process and suggestions here – so helpful to others! Does UHU actually stay on? My glue stick complaint is that over time things let go….Big hugs to you!

Thanks for this list of suggestions. Im working on broadening my horizon and always looking for ideas on what other artist use. This pouch will make it nice to carry supplies when I head to my moms. I do acrylic painting but she is showing me ways to do watercolor instead. So something new is always fun! Fingers crossed…

Thank you for sharing the gift list with us. It’s such a thoughtful idea on what creative gift to give to someone. It’s wonderful to see what tools you use to create your slow drawings. I throughly enjoyed creating with you and the group this year Amy. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together and just slow draw. I have learnt some wonderful techniques that is my go too when I need to reconnect and just create. Thank you so much Amy

Great list! I definitely want to check out the white gel pen. A favorite item of mine to suggest is a set of 24 “Portfolio” brand water soluble oil pastels. They are inexpensive yet vibrant and fun to use for all ages.

I love this list….I’ve already taken some of your recommendations and have a journal that I’ve been gluing my inchies into. The DS travel set is definitely on my list for the future. I love the idea of having a cute pouch to gather all your supplies and be ready to go. Thanks for all of your posts and for sharing your art and guidance with us all.

I was just wondering about good gifts for artists! Great list! I have never heard of YES paste, so definitely looking that up! And I’m curious which Daniel Smith set you’ve loved (is it pans, tubes?). I love the theme of portable/travel friendly things. And also the gift of time and learning. Thanks for sharing!

Great list. I used to use YES paste… thank you for reminding me about it. Gonna put on my list. And I love the pouch….being able to see what is inside. I usually have to dump mine if I’m looking for a particular item.

Love your list Amy. I have just about everything on your supply list. Still don’t feel like I am comfortable enough with dabbling in watercolor and mixing colors to “justify” the Daniel Smith watercolor set. Maybe that needs to be a gift I ask for. A treat someone give me. I know my watercoloring improved when I switched from Canson XL to the Strathmore watercolor paper that you recommended. So possible that would be true with the paints too. One thing I can’t live without is my Teflon bone folder. It helps so much when gluing down my inchies, etc. It wipes right off if I get glue on it. But maybe because I am still very much a bookbinder.
Thank you, as always, for all you do so generously from your big heart Amy.

Hi Sue: I think it’s okay to use “okay” watercolors for a while until you see if you use them consistently. Once I use something consistently though, I upgrade because often the cheap stuff just doesn’t behave like it should and leads to frustration. Windsor + Newton make a travel set of watercolors too that I like.

Your bone folder is a trusted friend!
And thank YOU Sue, for always giving from YOUR big heart.

Hi Amy, I’ve been using my Pigma Graffics pen from my scrap booking days but am going to ask Santa for the pens you like, and give them a try.
I also have to tell you how your slow drawing classes really helped me this morning.
I was having some trouble breathing, I have asthma, and knew I needed to slow down and breath. I got my little book that I have been doing my drawing in, and I sat down , concentrated on my breathing, while I drew slow ovals. It helped so much!!
So thank you for classes on slow drawing.

Thanks for a lovely list, Amy. I tried the YES paste once, but it was a “seconds” from someone else, and it dried right up. Maybe it’s time to try it again. I’m also drooling over the Daniel Smith palette and colors. The book looks intriguing as well. And speaking of pouches, I have a special pouch just for slow drawing pieces that I glue onto blank cards and use as Thank You’s and quick notes. Thanks for a lot of peaceful Friday afternoons!

Oh Nel, I would DEFINITELY recommend trying it again. As long as you keep the seal on, I find it really lasts and it really is my favorite adhesive. It’s strong and gives you a minute or two to readjust if you need. XO

I love reviewing this list each year, along with your book list! I appreciate your mention of the gift of time most of all! Somehow that is always the hardest gift to request. Why is that? This year I gifted myself the Yes! paste and I love it! So smooth and bubble free, I have been using it for everything. Thank you Amy for all you bring to us in such a loving and giving way. The book you recommended by Victoria Finlay is my favourite book of all time. Such joy. No stress. It is a perfect read when there is a lot going on in your life, or when travelling. Each chapter is independent from the others. So if you read one or two chapters, then don’t pick it up again for 3 months, it won’t matter. You will not have ‘lost the plot’. You can still be transported to the far corners of the world and across time, within a paragraph of starting the next chapter. I have read it multiple times over the years.
