How long did that take you?
It’s one of the questions I get most often as an artist, but in a way, I think it’s the wrong question. While students are often genuinely curious about the time the work takes, I think there’s often an embedded assumption that they could never make that kind of time for art.
I wanted to chronicle the process of making this page from start to finish. I share some of my tips and tricks for making time for art, so that you can do it too.

Tips and Tricks for Making Time for Art
- Prep a small portable art kit for travel.
- Be bold and create in public, really everyone is staring at their phone!
- Leave your work out and in process, even the water, with no set up time, you’ll get started quickly.
- Instead of looking at your phone when you need a break, take a few minutes to work on one small part of the page.

Love the Icelandic poppies illustration. It’s inspired me to plant a few seeds this April!
OOH what an amazing idea! I would love that but the bunnies always eat poppies in my yard. I’m so glad this video helped too!
I try to do something every day. I create by drawing portraits of people and animals usually 16×30 to larger. I love working detail in large size. I am not tremendously disciplined but I try to do something every each day , from 15 minutes to an hour or much longer. (lol)I sometimes get lost and hours later ;). Commissions are always a treat!!
Slow drawing has been a gift. I’ve completed three small journals so far with a plan to have them made into greeting cards.
I love calligraphy, too. Just fun! I tell everyone I never got past kindergarten in my love for creating.

Hi Amy, what a lovely demo, thank you. I noticed that you have small ceramic discs for holding paint/pigment and I believe I have the same set. I almost tossed them because the concave center is throwing me off. the paint seems to run down to the outer ring, and I’m not really sure how to use it. any advice?
Hi Carolyn – I’m happy you enjoyed. I think we have different ones because I purposefully chose the ones that were pretty flat it’s slightly off, but not much. Sorry I can’t help.

Thanks for this video! It really reminds me that I can work in shorter segments of time, rather than needing to take a big block of time which is harder to carve out from family life. Also your comment about other people on their phones reminds me that I could choose more often to be the artist, rather than the phone user! Your Poppies are so beautiful and creative, but something much simpler from your book would be ideal for me – I must set up a portable container with pens and paper in and stop doomscrolling…
Yes Anne – simple is great, and I too have to remind myself to get off the blasted device. I get caught all the time. It’s a practice I guess!
