Developing Your Artistic Voice

Dear Wonderful, Creative You:

This quarter in The Gathering, we are focused on developing your voice as an artist. So many of my students tell me that they love the slow drawing and botanicals we create, but they struggle to make their own patterns and drawings. They want to make work that is uniquely their own, to express and translate the beauty they see. We have created a cohort so that students can support and help each other to create an idea generation system that works for them. After teaching this month’s Simple Patterns workshop, I wanted to offer some key mindset tips to play like a child and develop ideas like a scientist, as well as another concrete example of pattern iteration to play with this month. I thought it would be fun to share all of this with you too.

You can get the Your Artistic Voice PDF I mention in the video here, it’s free!

I would love to hear what variations you are going to make to the ovals series I’ve shown you here. Use the PDF to give you even more creative insights and let us know your creative plans in the comments below.

Happy creating!

Amy

I’ve been doodling all my life so this feels natural to me. I also need to allow myself to relax and take the time for myself.

We often forget to simplify, to go back to basics. To do this exercise in my own way, I want to replace the beans with tiny leaves. This way, I will be able to represent both the seasons and my moods. Sometimes, I force myself to create a bit too much and I forget to play. Leaving markers and watercolors lying around with little notebooks that don’t take hours to bring to life. Exploring, simply to avoid standing still, I think is so important, and we sometimes forget that in the chaos of daily life. We tell ourselves we don’t really have the time instead of just taking two short minutes, which often turn into much more… Much more time, and also much more experience!

This is such a wonderful reflection! I really enjoyed reading about why you chose leaves and your reminder to simplify and go back to basics ❤️ Thank you for sharing this with us!
